After graduating from Sheffield University with an upper second-class honours degree in History in 1998, my first job was in the arrears department of a mid-sized UK lender. All I needed at the time was a job to pay off the student debt I owed to my bank. What I got was a crash course in the dangers of excessive debt accumulation as I dealt with people deep in debt and in desperate plight.
